keene.gallery TOBIAS KEENE The Black Paintings SPRING 2026 TOBIAS KEENE "THE BLACK PAINTINGS" PRESENTS A SERIES OF CANVASES DEFINED BY EXPANSIVE DARK SURFACES Across these works, Tobias Keene returns to childhood not as memory or narrative, but as a psychological condition shaped by suspension, restraint, and attention. Familiar actions—dancing, sitting, skipping, holding—are removed from their expected environments and held instead within dark, indeterminate spaces. These paintings resist resolution or sentimentality. Movement is arrested, gestures are isolated, and figures appear bound to invisible structures that govern balance, proximity, and control. What emerges is not a sequence of scenes, but a series of held moments in which vulnerability, ritual, and collective presence quietly converge. VIEW PAINTINGS arrow_drop_down_circle @KeeneOnArt
